Sales and the 'Talent Magnet'

A lot is written about being a ‘Talent Magnet’, either as a company, or as President. It’s all good practice – listen, mentor, reward, provide clear goals and career maps. Good practice for the employer, but what about the employee?

All these buy-outs and mergers is starting sound like the financial services sector! perhaps the time has come to realize that no sector is immune to the effects of the ongoing crisis and that, ultimately, when the markets do eventually turn upward (and they will!) we'll be greeted with smaller, more humble industries across all sectors.

Not sure I agree with the idea of a "smaller and more humble" industry. If the financial sector has taught us anything, it's that size breeds hubris – the bigger these companies get, the more they think they can get away with. Maybe once the global giants have all experienced a cathartic failure (a la the so-called "superbanks") then smaller players might come to the fore, but at what cost? As Wall Street has shown, that's a painful process to go through...

Mergers and acquisitions are the only way for companies to survive through these turbulent times. This will, in the long term, cause problems for smaller pharmaceutical companies. But there are potentially more job cuts in the pipeline if these survival tactics are not adopted by larger firms.
