Valuable Access to Information on bio-based syntheses

A new audience of researchers eager to go beyond traditional synthetic processes has found a wealth of information in the literature and patent records in CAS databases.

SciFinder provides immediate access to content from over 9500 journals, 50 active patent issuing authorities, with coverage spanning chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and process engineering. Coverage includes journals such as Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Bioresource Technology, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biotechnology Progress, Science, and more. Our databases contain more than 31 million substances, 58 million protein and DNA sequences, and more than 13 million reactions, including biotransformations.

CAS databases offer bibliographic information, abstracts, and even full-text articles and patents. We maintain the largest collection of substance and chemistry-related bibliographic records dating back to the early 19th century, and the most comprehensive integrated database of scientific journals and patents. In fact, more than 60 percent of the registered substances in CAS Registry are from patents.

Supply and price uncertainty of petroleum based feedstocks is forcing industry to look for alternatives. Industrial biotechnology (biotransformations on a commercial scale) offers the potential for economic and environmentally sustainable routes to building block chemicals and alternate fuels. This emerging area of science is being reflected in our literature, substance, and reaction databases, just as it is for research focusing on biological processes related to drugs, nutriceuticals, food and other applications.

SciFinder 2007 can easily lead scientists to information for each emerging area of science. It can support your research through the Quick Explore feature where you can use a structure answer to launch a new search or refine one; directly export CHEMCATS data to Microsoft Excel for further manipulation, sorting and filtering through the Commercially Available Report feature; combine the current answer set with a saved answer set using various set operations; and print structure answer lists in a grid layout.

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, provides the world's largest and most current collection of chemical and related scientific information. For more information, visit our web site at www.cas.org.
